Background

Trainspotting is based on a novel of the same title written by Scottish author Irvine Welsh in 1993. The book was only Welsh's first novel but it was well received by local critics. It also reached the final ten for of Booker Prize the same year.

The film, directed by Danny Boyle, was released three years later in 1996. Same as the book, the film revolves around a group of young heroin addicts in Edinburgh, Scotland. The adapted screenplay was written by John Hodge and surprisingly, contained no reference to the habbit of train spotting as in the title.

Since the film contained quite a number of scenes associated with drug use, it caused certain controversy after its release. However, like the book, it was critically acclaimed. It received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in that year's Academy Awards and has continued to be praised as a cult classic.
